Satellite Canada Army Run in Afghanistan on September 6 |
|
A satellite Canada Army Run will take place in Kandahar Air Field (KAF) in the dust, heat and altitude of Afghanistan on Sunday, September 6. A team in KAF, led by Major Guy Leclerc, has been working with Canada Army Run Director Major Chris Horeczy to bring the spirit and camaraderie of the Run to the Canadian men and women in Afghanistan. Beginning at 5:00 am local Afghanistan time, 400 men and women – sporting Canada Army Run shirts and bibs shipped from Canada – will run either 5K or 15K within the protected areas of the camp. For many soldiers, this event will mark the conclusion of a six-month tour in Afghanistan. Some soldiers returning to Canada will also participate in the September 20th Run. SNC-Lavalin PAE, also a sponsor of the Ottawa event, is sponsoring the KAF event. All fundraising efforts go to Soldier On.
All media queries related to the Afghanistan run should be directed to the Media Liaison Office at 1 866 377 0811. |

SOLDIER ON Fund to Benefit from Canada Army Run Fundraising
One of the key initiatives that fundraising efforts for Canada Army Run benefits is
Soldier On – a fund that provides resources and opportunities for ill and injured military personnel to attain and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Started in 2006 by Warrant Officer Andrew McLean, a Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technician and ultra-marathon runner, and the Canadian Paralympic Committee, Soldier On has to date benefitted more than 50 men and women in the military. Among those are:
- the first beneficiary of the fund, retired Sgt. Steve Daniel, who became a paraplegic following a parachute accident and went on to compete in the Beijing Paralympics last year;
- Master Corporal Jody Mitic, who lost both legs when he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan 2.5 years ago and who will be running his first-ever half marathon (in Canada Army Run); and
- Sgt. Karen McCoy, who lost one leg due to cancer and is now a member of the Canadian sitting volleyball team.
You can find specific testimonials from other beneficiaries here. back to top » |
